Worlds Apart: Engineering Remote Sensing Devices

Engineering Is Everywhere | Developed by the Museum of Science Boston

How do scientists and engineers gather information from places in the solar system that are difficult to reach? In this unit, students use the Engineering Design Process to design remote sensing devices that can help scientists learn about a newly discovered moon.
Worlds Apart: Engineering Remote Sensing Devices

Each inquiry-based lesson includes the following components:

  • Explore: As they begin to arrive, students are invited to explore maker space materials, loose parts, photographs, artifacts, writing samples, and works of art.
  • Engage: During our Gathering Circle, students recall observations made during their exploration and talk about their own experiences in the world around them.
  • Explain: After a brief lesson, students work together to acquire a formal understanding of newly-presented science and engineering concepts.
  • Elaborate: Students apply their newly-acquired knowledge to a lab, demonstration or hands-on activity.
  • Evaluate: In our Closing Circle, students reflect on what they've learned and review key terms.
